Brief

Build some material which will allow Yeho (instructor at the Flatiron School) to be considered for a place on the show Project Runway as a contestant.

#WWYW

We decided to bill Yeho as an already existing Youtube star with the viral hashtag #WWYW which stands for What Would Yeho Wear. We built a backstory for her as already being very popular and trendy in the fashion community.

Role - UI Designer & Fashion Industry Expert

As the UI designer, I worked with other UI designers and UX designers to come up with our approach in this design challenge.

My role as the Fashion Industry Expert was to give my input about what materials would be needed for Yeho to get into the show. Also, to provide some of my personal materials for her “portfolio.” My tasks included research, interviewing, brainstorming, collecting materials, creating Youtube image.

Toolbox

I used a combination of Drive, Illustrator, and Sketch.

Problem

4 of the UX and UI designers have to come up with materials to get our instructor Yeho onto the show Project runway.

Project Timeline

We had 5 minutes to interview Yeho about some of her fashion likes, dislikes, and general style guidelines.

We then had 30 minutes to work together and come up with a game plan. It was very open with what we could create to get her on the show. It could be a problem statement, a photo, a video, a letter, anything.

Research

Thankfully, as the Fashion Industry Expert (I have 8 years experience as a fashion designer), I was able to surmise exactly what material would be most useful to get Yeho onto the show! I knew she would need to produce proof she is competent in draping, sewing, pattern making, and sketching.
We made sure to ask Yeho about her style choices, favourite fabrics, colors, textures, styles, icons, etc.

Brainstorming

After interviewing Yeho, we needed to decide what type of material we felt best to present to make Yeho look like a strong candidate for the show.

We decided that a snapshot of her “portfolio” would be the best material. We knew we would need to showcase her abilities in draping, sewing, pattern making, and sketching.

"Portfolio" Snapshot

We wanted a background image, signature, catchphrase, photos of draping, sewing, and sketching. We also wanted to make sure we showed her faux Youtube star status.  I shared my portfolio with the group and we chose images that best reflected Yeho’s style. I then created a photo of one of Yeho’s Youtube videos by taking her profile photo from Slack and overlaying it with the gradient, text and icons used by Youtube on their video thumbnails.

The rest of the group downloaded and placed the images from my portfolio, background image, signature, and fonts/catchphrase.
